Split an expense unequally

Updated

Not every cost splits evenly. Maybe one person ordered the lobster, or someone covered two nights instead of one. Donget lets you divide an Expense exactly the way it really happened.

Open the split options

  1. Add an Expense as usual, or open an existing one and tap Edit.
  2. Tap the split option (it shows Equally by default).
  3. Pick the method that fits.

Choose a split method

  • Equally — the default. The amount is divided evenly between the Members who share it.
  • Exact amounts — type what each person owes. The total must match the Expense amount, and Donget shows you the running total as you go.
  • Shares — give each person a number of shares. Two shares to four shares means that person covers twice as much. Great for rooms, portions or anyone using more.
  • Percentage — assign a percent to each person. Donget checks it adds up to 100%.

Pick the Members involved, set their split, and tap Save.

A quick example

Dinner costs 90 for three friends, but one didn’t drink:

  • Use exact amounts: 35, 35 and 20.
  • Or use shares: give the two drinkers 2 shares each and the third 1 share.

Either way, Balances update instantly so everyone sees their fair share.

Tip: You can split a single line item differently from the rest of a bill by adding it as its own Expense. Keep shared items in one Expense and personal extras in another — your Balances stay honest without any mental math.

Everyone stays in sync

However you split, Donget recalculates Balances right away and syncs the change to every Member in realtime. When it’s time to clear up, smart Settle up still finds the fewest Payments to make everyone even.

All split methods are included for free — no “Pro” upgrade and no limits.
